Outcast: Mass murder fantasies

Belgium was never part of the curriculum when I was in school, so my knowledge of the country was always sparse. As I grew older, however, I discovered Belgium was a country that exceeded in one excellent export: beer. Ah yes, for a seemingly small country these guys produce a hell of a lot of beer, and at a consistently high quality too. I could talk about (and drink) about beer for hours, it’s such a beautiful thing. The problem is, once I’ve Grottenbier on my mind, my concentration starts to waiver. In fact, I will have to Duvel to stay on topic here.
So on to Outcast then. As you probably tell from the imagery in the top Leffe hand corner, these guys play a particular brand of brutal death metal. Damn, did I mention a Belgian beer again? We’re really in Troublette now. OK, try to ignore it and I’ll Bush on.
The music is pretty straight forward, uncomplicated and brutal. Vocals are a combination of traditional death metal growls plus the occasional higher pitch cry (a bit like Macabre). Guitars are Brigand heavy, with a really dirty production quality suiting the style well. Drums are well played, though I Felix too low in the mix, particularly the kick drums.
I’ve Stille Nacht stopped doing it, have I? Damn, you probably think I’m some sort of Kwak.
OK, back to the album. There are a bunch of sound grabs littered throughout the album, some in English, the others in what I assume is Flemish. These grabs are both Goudenband, good in that they break up the album and add to the creepy serial killer feel, but bad in that some go over a minute (and not everyone knows Flemish so we don’t know what the fuck it’s about anyway). The band should probably do away with these in future as they are not exactly what I would call a Stella addition.
So to conclude, this is pretty good straight out death album. If you’re looking for something grimy and brutal, this could be the one for you. It’s not a world beater, but it’s a damn fine album nonetheless. Finally, I have to say it’s been a real Boon writing this review, join us over at the forum where no doubt Silly Saison will continue with more pun Delirium.

P.S. Hail Satan.
